Breast Enlargement Surgery

A breast implant is a prosthesis used to alter the size and shape of a woman's breasts (known as breast augmentation, breast enlargement, mammoplasty enlargement, augmentation mammoplasty or the common slang term boob job) for cosmetic reasons; to reconstruct the breast (e.g. after a mastectomy; or to correct congenital chest wall deformities), or as an aspect of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery. Pectoral implants are a related device used in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of the male chest wall. A breast tissue expander is a temporary breast implant used during staged breast reconstruction procedures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the India.

After the regular laboratory and preventing tests, in the consultation before the surgery the surgeon and the patient together choose the appropriate size and form silicon implants, the texture of which may be smooth or rough. One of the more frequent techniques used requires an incision under the lower portion of the breast near the chest wall or under the lower portion of the areola (the darker area around your nipple). After the incision is made, a pocket is created under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle. The implant is securely positioned in the pocket, and small sutures are used to close the incision. When procedure has been completed, the patient will be taken into the recovery area and continue to be monitored. Breast augmentation surgery, like all surgeries, involves some risk of infection, so patients should be careful after breast augmentation surgery to keep incision clean and call their doctor at the first sign of infection. Similarly to the other plastic surgeries, breast augmentation is usually done under general anesthesia, and the duration of the surgery is about 1-1,5 hours. After surgery, an elastic bandage or a surgical bra over gauze dressings will be needed. The stitches are taken out after two weeks, and the wear of a special sports bra is advised for 4-8 weeks and during this time if its possible patients are recommended not to do any physical work.
What is Breast Enlargement Surgery?
The medical term for breast enlargement surgery is "augmentation mammoplasty." Breast enlargement surgery may be performed for a variety of reasons. Breast enlargement surgery may be completed for personal reasons in women who feel that their breasts are small or have lost their shape over time. Other women may be recovering from surgery for breast cancer after having one or both breasts removed (a procedure known as a “mastectomy”), or have trauma to the breast that requires reconstruction. Whatever the reason, breast enlargement surgery can be completed with a minimal risk of side effects when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon.
How is Breast Enlargement Surgery Performed?
In breast enlargement surgery, all patients recieve anesthesia. The anesthesia used may be "general," where the patient is "put to sleep" for the duration of the operation. Your surgeon may also decide to use "local" anesthesia. Wtih local anesthesia, only the area around the operation is anesthetized, and a sedative is used. There are advantages to using local anesthesia including a smaller risk of serious side effects. You should speak with your surgeon to find out more about the risks and benefits of each type of anesthetic.

In breast enlargement surgery, implants are used to increase the size of the breasts. The two main types of implants are saline and silicone. Silicone implants were recently re-approved by the FDA after being taken off the market. (For more information, please see the next section). There are different approaches that your surgeon may use to place the implants. These include going through the nipple, under the breast, through the armpit, and through the navel. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages, and the specific technique depends on your body type.

You should speak with your surgeon regarding the different techniques to determine which is the best option for you. The surgeon will place the implant into a "pocket" between layers of tissue. Once the implant has been placed, your surgeon will close the incision with sutures and place guaze to help with the healing. The total time of surgery depends on the technique used, and generally lasts less than two hours.
Types of Breast implant surgery ?
  • All breast implants utilize a silicone shell but the fillings differ, either gel-filled or saline-filled.
  • The outer silicone shell, which give the prosthesis its elasticity and integrity, may be smooth (shiny polished) or textured (finely rough) surface.
  • There is no doubt that the breasts, augmented with textured implant, providing a disruptive surface for collagen interface, have a lower tendency to develop contracting capsules than the breasts augmented with the smooth implants.
  • Breast implants may not last a lifetime and the rates of rupture in saline filled implant is higher than the gel filled one.
  • The gel filled implants I always recommend to my patients contain high cohesive gel, which is more crosslinked than a standard silicone gel and provides a higer resistance to flow. If the implant shell is ruptured, the inside gel will rarely escape (not leak).
  • The shape of the implants I prefer to use is round shape, low to moderate profile (projection), providing natural upper fullness as well as nice clevages of your new breasts.
  • My favorite choice of breast implant is Siltex Textured Surface Breast Implants from Mentor corporation.
